Beckham announced in January that he has signed a five-year deal with the Galaxy worth £250million in salary, signing-on fees and related sponsorship deals.

Club owner Tim Leiweke, president and chief executive of Anschutz Entertainment Group, speaking at the International Football Arena Asia in Beijing, said: "David Beckham will do more for US soccer than any other activity in the young history of North America's top league.

"With David coming to play for our team soccer has made a quantum leap in terms of public awareness.

"His signing created such a huge interest that we should be able to make good on our investment before he even arrives in California in July."

Leiweke's AEG Group are also considering a major entertainment project in Shanghai, he added.
