BANGKOK Glass FC's Aussie coach Phil Stubbins expects newly signed striker Billy Mehmet to smash it in the Thai Premier League after leaving Perth Glory for regular first team football.
The former Adelaide United assistant coach sees the 29-year-old target man as a key figure in his bid to overhaul the club’s footballing culture.
The Rabbits finished a disappointing eighth in the 18-club comp last season but Stubbins is confident the two-year deal with Mehmet will help turnaround the club’s fortunes.
“There’s been a good overhaul of the squad with Bangkok Glass FC for this coming campaign,” he told au.fourfourtwo.com.
“When you’re trying to change your brand, in a footballing way, it’s only through the introduction of certain players with the traits you feel can help build that change that the transition can become a reality.
“Billy brings all the ingredients to help in that area. He’s got great presence, both as a player and as a personality.
“He’s got a sound goalscoring record when playing regularly and to be perfectly honest, he’s technically very sound.”
Mehmet left Glory after failing to nail down a regular starting spot and Stubbins is more than happy to offer the Englishman the first team football he craves.
“He’ll fit into our style as either a lone striker or playing just off the striker,” the former Victorian coach of the year said.
“Basically, he’s a good footballer that can play in short or scrap for the ball when he needs to and he can play to a game plan as a team player first and foremost.
"There are some very good foreign players playing in Thailand now and the standard has picked up significantly in the last two years with next season showing all the signs of improving again based on the new signings into the league.
"It won’t be easy but I believe Billy Mehmet will be a big hit in the Thai Premier League where I’m confident he will score and create goals for us”.
According to the club’s website, Mehmet was due to arrive in Thailand last night.
Bangkok Glass has changed coaches seven times since joining the TPL in 2009 and
Stubbins, who took over in October, will have little margin for error when the new season starts in March.
