United demolished Mudgeeraba 12-1 in their opening pre-season clash with Shane Smeltz netting nine of the goals.

Bleiberg was delighted to get off to a winning start but was keeping the win firmly in perspective.

"It was a good hit out and obviously Shane (Smeltz) will be happy to have scored the goals but it was a practice game as part of our training. I don't think he (Smeltz) will be getting carried away and taking the goals total too seriously.

"Steve Pantelidis will be happy with his goal, I'm not sure the last time he will have scored from so far out and I thought Michael Thwaite was very good.

"It was good to get out there though and it was also a chance for the fans to see the players. At each of these warm up games, it is very important that we are there, signing autographs and showing that we are part of this community," Bleiberg told au.fourfourtwo.com.

This was just the first of half a dozen games against local sides before United head off to Asia for numerous fixtures against several club and national sides.

Then it is expected they will return to Australia in early July to take on Mark Schwarzer's Fulham at Skilled Park.

"It is a very deliberate structure of games. We go from the light to the heavy," said Bleiberg.
