Round 3 never came close to the dizzy heights of round 2 but here goes for the weekly wrap.
The Good
A win for Perth, some pressure off Dave Mitchell and a decent turn out for their first home game giving them a platform to build from in the coming months.
Clint Bolton's save to earn Sydney a point....not the best penalty but certainly not the worst and Bolton did well to get across and down low...add to that the pressure of the situation knowing a successful conversion would mean a loss for his team.
Melbourne's belated first win of the season saw the return of Adrian Leijer who, in spite of playing with his boarding card tucked into his shorts and duty free bottles still clinking in the changing room, added some much needed stability to Melbourne's back line and a 40 yard pin point pass to set up Archie for the winner...welcome back Mr Leijer.
But the pick off the weekend's action for me was the exquisite first time through ball from Charlie Miller for Henrique to set up Brisbane's goal in yesterday's game. First time and with deliberate spin to take the ball away from the defender with the first bounce and into the path of the overlapping Henrique it was a moment of rare quality on this or any other weekend. Watch it again tonight...without the spin it's the defenders ball and the spin was absolutely deliberate as you can see by the way Miller strikes the ball.
The Bad
After probably the best weekend's football in A-League history you would have hoped that the league average crowd's could have topped 10,000 but no.....a decidedly average turn out saw an average of just 9,153 across the five games with the worst being the Roar's dismal effort of just over 7,000. Promising crowds in Perth and again in Adelaide were dragged down by that horror crowd in Brisbane and another poor turn-out in Townsville where it's difficult to see crowds flocking to a team performing so badly.
Ben Kennedy's hair cut deserves a mention for a Blackadderesque barnet normally inflicted by an overzealous mother let loose with a pair of blunt scissors and a mixing bowl. One look at the picture of me accompanying this blog will tell you I've been the victim of similar styling...however I was 12 at the time.
The Ugly
Robbie Kruse's tackle should have been a straight red card....late, pre-meditated and reckless and in the context of other cards given during the game it was difficult to see how he stayed on the pitch. A young player of such early promise, Kruse is now playing for his future on a short term contract and this sort of on field conduct is hardly going to endear himself to manager Frank Farina and senior players Tiatto and Moore is it? Oh wait....
