AUSTRALIA'S bookies reckon the A-League IS a two-horse race at the halfway stage of the campaign - despite Melbourne Victory coach Ernie Merrick's denial
Merrick believes it is too early to say that only Sydney FC and Victory are battling it out for the toilet seat - but the evidence from the punters doesn't back that up.
TAB Sportsbet, Centrebet and Sportsbet all have Melbourne Victory as favourites for grand final success with Sydney FC hot on their heels.
Victory are $2.50 with TAB Sportsbet, $3.20 with Centrebet and $2.85 with Sportsbet. Sydney FC are $2.75, $3.35 and $3.10.
Only Gold Coast United are a potential fly in the grand final betting ointment at $6, $5.50 and $5.50 respectively.
TAB Sportsbet spokesman Glenn Munsie told au.fourfourtwo.com: "There is strong interest with the most money being placed on Sydney FC.
"All teams have had hiccups but it's really Sydney, Melbourne and also Gold Coast who are leading the way."
Earlier this week Merrick said: "It's probably a bit early to say that (it's a two-horse race). Sydney's a good side, they're winning, so it's good that we're keeping up with them and just sitting in behind them.
"This is the heart of the season when your depth is well and truly tested. It's good to see we've got the sort of depth that's getting us the points."
