Bridges, 32, who played over 200 games in the English Premier League but was blighted by recurring injuries, this afternoon told his Newcastle Jets teammates of his decision to retire.

“After great consideration it was a difficult to decision to make,” said Bridges.

“However the opportunity to enter the next phase of my life is one that is too exciting not to take now whilst it is being offered."

Ever popular Bridges will not be lost to Newcastle Jets though after accepting a position with the club as International Football & Business Development Manager.

He added: “The opportunity to help develop the next group of Footballers for the Jets and to join the Tinkler Sports Group is really appealing.”

Jets Advisory Board Chairman Ray Baartz hailed Bridges' contribution to the Jets since joining the club in 2009 following a spell at Carlisle United and MK Dons after his time at Sydney FC in 2007/8

“Michael is just a class act,” said Baartz.

“He his hugely respected by all at Newcastle Jets and to have Michael to continue with the Club in an off-field role not only is a great coup by the club, but speaks volumes for the direction the club is heading in."

Bridges will share his time with the Jets Commercial team and involving his passion and knowledge for the game by working with the soon to be established Jets Academy to develop and enhance the junior talent in the region.
