A booking for a verbal spat with the referee in Sydney's 3-2 defeat by Wellington Phoenix in the Pre-Season Cup triggered a ban which saw the forward miss the opening A-League fixture against Melbourne Victory.

Mitchell Prentice was dismissed in the same match while Dez Giraldi also earned a one-game ban, leaving coach John Kosmina to blast the offenders for stupidity.

Brosque admitted his coach had been less than impressed in the dressing room after the game but is confident the players now know the score.

The former Queensland Roar striker is hoping for a start against Central Coast Mariners this weekend after completing his suspension.

He told au.fourfourtwo.com: "It was very frustrating to miss that first game through suspension. The rules this year are that they (referees) will not stand for people saying too much and as a result I don't think you'll see too much backchat this season.

"It can be difficult because things happen, mistakes happen, and it's hard to just sit back and accept it. But that's what we'll have to do."

Brosque says self-preservation is another strong motivating factor in steering clear of suspension.

He said: "There's four or five forwards at the club all striving for a spot and you don't want to do anything to harm your chances.

"Young Chris Payne has come in and looked very confident while John Aloisi and Mark Bridge were both regular starters for their clubs last season.

"There's Dez Giraldi as well so there's real firepower there for Kossie to choose from."

Saturday's trip to Bluetongue Stadium brings back bittersweet memories for Brosque.

He said: "We had the 5-4 win there in the A-League last season but then they beat us there a few weeks ago in the Pre-Season Cup.

"Obviously they've just signed Mark Bosnich but I don't know if he'll play. He certainly had a blinder against us (on his debut) when they beat us 3-0.

"He was one of the best, if not the best, goalkeepers to come out of Australia and it would be great to look back one day and think you stuck a goal or two past him.

"But whoever plays in goal for them, we just want to go there, put together a good performance and come away with a result."
