“Yeah, I've thought about that as well with results and everything going our way,” he told au.fourfourtwo.com during the Socceroo training camp this week.

If after this weekend's round, Melbourne's hopes are still alive for a finals place, they would go to Sydney in their final home and away fixture needing a win against their bitter rivals whilst hoping other results go their way.

A win in Sydney and a finals spot would cap a stunning end of season upturn for Ernie Merrick's side. It's looming as the game of the season - but Broxham is not getting too excited just yet.

“We're sort of not going to bank on anything," he admitted. "We just want to concentrate on our own performance and hope that results go our way.”

Broxham added Victory has not had that cutting edge they displayed last season.

“We have sort of created a lot of chances this season but we haven't taken them," he said.

"Even against Roar last week we had two great chances to score to make it 4-1 but we didn't take them.

“I guess it's just that little bit of luck that we had last year. The team's still alive for the finals – we're still there but we're really relying on Adelaide and Newcastle to get bad results and us winning our next two games.

“We'll just play the first game against Wellington on Friday – if we don't win then it's over anyway. But we just want to get the win and see how it goes.

“It's still there – to make the finals would be a bonus.”
