Now boss of Scottish club Inverness, the former Moore Park boss has hit out in an interview with English newspaper The Times.

Butcher said he had been hoping for a life-changing experience Down Under but was back in Britain less than a year after making the switch.

He said: "It was a total nightmare. Sydney had won the league title the year before but I couldn't sign anyone, there were political problems at the club and everything went wrong. I received a hell of a lot of resentment as well.

"I was absolutely hammered by the press. I used to try to write articles for the Sydney Morning Herald but I got hammered for absolutely everything. They even called me 'a hobo'."

However, Butcher still doesn't regret trying his luck in a completely different environment.

"It opens your eyes to who you are and what you are about," he said.

And while he may not have enjoyed the job, he had few complaints about the environment.

"And I still say that, away from all the professional hassles I had, living in Sydney was fantastic. Wow, what a place. But it didn't work out," he said.
