MELBOURNE Heart have flagged their interest in signing former England international David Beckham to a 10-game guest stint when his contract with Major League Soccer outfit LA Galaxy winds up next month.
The club told au.fourfourtwo.com they were keen to bring the football superstar to Melbourne and were “pursuing the opportunity.”
Beckham’s appearance in red and white would help arrest Heart’s declining home attendances which have almost halved since the 11,000 at the beginning of the season.
Perth Glory followed up with their own statement saying they would be “mad not to seriously consider” the global icon.
Chief Executive Paul Kelly said: “We are always happy to speak to players of the calibre of David Beckham, who would be great for the Hyundai A-League as illustrated by the effect of Alessandro Del Piero, Emile Heskey and Shinji Ono.
“At the end of the day it’s the coach, Ian Ferguson who makes these decisions and we as a club, have a process that we follow when recruiting players.
Football Federation Australia confirmed it received an approach by Beckham's management regarding the current A-League season and discussions are in the early stages.
Meanwhile Heart’s cross town rivals Melbourne Victory have rejected the prospect of luring the 37-year-old crowd favourite to Etihad.
International marquees have helped turn the 2012/13 campaign into the most watched and attended season in A-League history.
Beckham’s signing would bring even greater global attention to the domestic game.
His previous three visits to Australian shores for friendlies against Sydney FC, Newcastle Jets, Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix have drawn massive crowds.
Fox Sports reported that the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player, who currently earns $US4 million a season in the MLS, has been offered to several A-League clubs.
In the past Beckham has been upbeat about the future of the Australian game noting the standard was on par with the US.
"The game's growing like it is in the US, and that's great to see,” he said previously. "People all around the world are talking about (the MLS and the A-League) now, and that's a sign of the growth in both countries."
In response to the latest development the FFA said: “The approach from David Beckham’s people is another sign of how much the Hyundai A-League has grown in stature on a global basis.
“Beckham is superstar on the world stage and he would be another massive signing for the Hyundai A-League after the arrivals of Alessandro Del Piero, Emile Heskey and Shinji Ono. But this approach remains at a very preliminary stage.”
