PERTH Glory has appointed West Australia's most successful coach Graham Normanton to the role as the club's recruitment manager as it attempts to focus on local talent.
Normanton is a WA coaching legend having guided All Flags State Premier League outfit Perth SC to a staggering 22 trophies, during his 11-year reign at the club, including five league premierships.
In his new role at Glory, Normanton will concentrate on identifying local talent and report directly to coach Ian Ferguson.
The appointment comes months after an internal review into Glory called for sweeping changes into the club's system of player recruitment and identified the need for a better development pathway for WA youth.
Perth chief executive Paul Kelly said the role was crucial to the long-term viability of the club.
“We need to continually develop West Australian talent from the All Flags State League and give them the best opportunities to play for Perth Glory,” Kelly said.
“Graham is definitely the best person to identify these players. His record as a coach is impeccable and he complements Ian Ferguson and Gareth Naven (youth team coach) to give us a more complete coaching structure.”
Normanton described the role exciting and said he believes he can find talent for the club from the local ranks.
“I’m looking forward to the role and feel I have something to offer,” Normanton said. “I think we have more talent in the WA State Premier League than we give it credit for
“With additional training and improved health advice, I feel there are players who can step up to play with Perth Glory in the Hyundai A-League."
He added: “The aim is to see more WA talent involved in Perth Glory than what currently exists at the moment.”
As a player, Normanton also scaled great heights, representing WA 11 times and playing against Nottingham Forrest.
Normanton played for Perth Azzuri, North Perth Croatia, Kingsway Olympic and Bayswater.
