EXCLUSIVE: Shannon Cole slipped through the fingers of Newcastle Jets according to former Sydney Olympic colleague Tarek Elrich.
Elrich is delighted to see Cole enjoying such a terrific start to life in the A-League and is convinced he can go the distance at top level.
The Jets wide man said: “When I was having a spell at Olympic Shannon reminded me that we’d played against each other when Newcastle was putting together its first team for the A-League (under Richard Money).
“For whatever reason it didn’t happen for Shannon then but I’m very happy to see him in the A-League now. I thought a contract wouldn’t have been too far away for him and he’s worked hard to get one.
“He’s a very confident player, loves taking people on, has two very good feet and what really helps him is that when something doesn’t come off for him he doesn’t let his head drop.”
The lack of arrogance is a trait which Elrich points to in two of his friends who have gone on to bigger and better things.
He said: “I think not getting carried away by things is important. I know Burnsy (Nathan Burns) and Bruce Djite and they’ve both remained level-headed and it’s been good for them.”
While delighted to see Cole making an impact, Elrich’s main focus is trying to stop his Newcastle boss from reaching for the hair dye.
The Jets have snatched draws at the death in both their A-League matches so far this season. Elrich joked: “I think we have to stop that otherwise it’s just going to turn Gary (van Egmond)’s hair grey.
“We know we could have had more out of both matches but we have to take the positives. Ever since I’ve been here there’s that great Australian spirit that has helped us, that desire never ever to give up.
“I think we’re playing some decent football and we’re confident we can get that first win on the board.”
