VETERAN Simon Colosimo has been named new Perth Glory captain after his return from a stint with Turkish club Sivasspor.
The experienced midfielder was handed the honour at the club’s season launch on last night.
Colosimo, the club’s reigning Most Glorious Player (joint winner) and Best Clubman award recipient, is one of the Glory’s most highly credentialed players with experience in Europe and Asia in addition to 26 national team caps.
“Simon has played international football at every level and is also a key component in the central spine of our side," said Perth coach Ron Smith.
"If you’re going to have an influence on what happens on the field then that is the place you’re best able to achieve that.
“We have a fairly young side and Simon is someone our players can look to during matches to have a calming influence when things might not be going our way plus provide the leadership and inspiration in our push towards the finals.
Colosimo said he was privileged to be offered the role and is eager to lead the team into what he strongly believes is an exciting new era for Perth Glory.
“There is a real buzz about the place and an air of confidence about the coming season and future of the club,” Colosimo said.
“I’m thrilled to be given the opportunity to lead this wonderful group of players and join some of the great names at Perth Glory that have worn the captain’s armband."
He added: “Perth Glory has a proud history and we are all committed to ensuring the club is again the benchmark of football in this country both on and off the field.”
Smith and Colosimo acknowledged the contributions of former skipper Jamie Harnwell in the first two seasons of the A-League.
Colosimo said he will look to him and other senior players to assist in his added responsibilities as captain.
“We have a tight knit squad and have built a strong club culture which can only lead to positive outcomes this season," he added.
"There are a number of players that have displayed natural leadership qualities and we’ll all work together to ensure we’re heading in the right direction.
“We are definitely not going to disappoint either the fans or ourselves this year, that’s for certain."
