CRAIG Moore is close to extending his stint as Queensland Roar's marquee star as he demands a flying start to the new A-League campaign.
The 32-year-old is set to follow Frank Farina and pledge himself to the club for at least another year.
Having come agonisingly close to clinching both the Premiers Plate and a Grand-Final berth last year, the former Socceroos captain says his charges enter the upcoming campaign quietly confident.
But the 32-year-old knows fulfilling their lofty goals won't be easy in what he predicts will be the toughest A-League season so far.
He told Sportal: "We believe that we have a good squad, we know that we're going into the season and Sydney are the strong favourites but that's a tag that they need to carry as well.
"We'll continue to do what we did last season up at Queensland Roar which is go about our business quietly but I believe that we've got a good chance.
"We were very close last year and our aim is obviously to go one better."
But while wary of John Kosmina's men, Moore is confident the club's new-look strike force featuring Dutchman Sergio van Dijk, young-gun Tim Smits, Scottish international Charlie Miller and returning Brazilian Reinaldo, will pile on the goals in the coming campaign.
Moore said: "Queensland Roar have always been a team that do create chances so hopefully we're in a position where we can take a lot of those opportunities.
"At the end of the day if we can manage to get the ball in the back of the net and keep things tight at the back I'm pretty sure we'll win far more games than we lose so I think we're in good shape."
Roar kick-off their season against Pre-Season Cup grand finalists Wellington Phoenix across the Tasman on Sunday.
Moore stressed the importance of a fast start against the confident Kiwis and challenged his side's younger brigade to back up their promising play last season.
He said: "I just hope we get off to a quicker start than what we did last season.
"We played some good stuff early doors but didn't really have any points to show for it, and when you're not playing that many games in a season it's important that you get off to a good start.
"So hopefully we can go across there and get a result or at least not come away with a defeat."
