According to police, Wanderers fans weren't involved and the ejections occurred after they tried to arrest a United fan who had let off a firecracker, with fellow supporters fighting back.

Police had to use pepper spray to control the unruly fans while reinforcements and police dogs arrived shortly after, as the trouble was swiftly quelled.

The incident comes in the wake of the weekend brawl between Wellington Phoenix and Newcastle Jets players in a pre-season friendly, while last week there was crowd trouble at a match between Sydney FC and Macarthur Rams.

Wanderers fans were not involved in the incident and the club's chairman Lyall Gorman told news.com.au that their actions showed what the club stood for.

"I thought our fans were exemplary, and showed what we stand for as a club," he said.

"They showed exactly the kind of behaviour we would want to see from them in any venue."
