NEWCASTLE Jets coach Branko Culina says Saturday's 2-0 victory over North Queensland Fury was a game his side simply had to win as they chase a place in the A-League finals.
The Jets moved up to seventh on the A-League table after the win in Townsville, with two goals coming inside the final quarter of an hour to clinch the victory.
"We said this is one of those games where you had just got to do whatever it takes but win and I thought we did that today superbly," Culina said.
The Newcastle boss, though, admitted Fury had their opportunities but was delighted to see his side grind out the result.
"I thought the first half they certainly had their chances and probably could have had a couple of goals but we hung in there," he said.
"In the second half we upped the tempo and made a few changes tactically as well as personnel and a credit to the players, they were superb."
Fury coach Franz Straka felt his side ran out of steam after a bright opening stanza.
"We played the first half so well," he said. "We were so strong.
"It was definitely an unlucky game. In the second half we didn't have the power. The boys did the best they could."
Fury skipper Ufuk Talay added: "I think in the second half we did fall a bit flat and I think we did look a bit tired. We conceded a goal through a set play which obviously killed us.
"We had a lot of opportunities in the first half but we couldn't put them away."
Bottom-placed Fury's next match is away to Adelaide United on Friday night, while the Jets face Melbourne Heart in midweek.
