The Newcastle Herald reported this morning that the Jets are on the verge of securing Culina - who wants to tear up the last year of his contract on the Glitter Stri.

But they say the Jets are also close to sealing a deal for Manchester United striker and former Ballon d'Or winner Michael Owen in an audacious attempt to stamp the Nathan Tinkler-owned club as a major player in the A-League.

Speaking at the club's headquarters, Mensink admitted that United and Culina may part ways at the end of the season - but refused to speculate on where the Socceroo would end up.

"It's true that Jason and the club have had a chat about extending his contract and it was also decided that he's free to talk to other clubs, internationally and domestically," Mensink said.

"Whether there's word that Jason's talking to Newcastle, I can't tell you. As far as we know it's just conjecture and I can't comment."

It would be a big blow for the club, who will also lose the services of Zenon Caravella, Dino Djulbic, Bas van den Brink and Steve Pantelidis at season's end.

But Mensink said that if Culina followed suit, it would give Gold Coast an incentive to dip back into the transfer market to 'bring some excitement back to the Gold Coast'.

"There's no doubt he's a quality player but we've got to move on and think ahead. It gives the club the opportunity to see what else is in the market now," he said.

"Given what's happening overseas there are probably a lot of prospective players out there who would be very useful to the Gold Coast setup."

"It'd be a big loss but at the end of the day it gives us the chance to expand the team more and not be solely reliant on one player either. If push comes to shove, we'll move on. It won't be the end of the club."

But Mensink dismissed suggestions that captain Culina's move could destabilise the club on the eve of a second consecutive appearance in the finals, hinting that United has made their own yet-to-be-revealed signings for next season.

"Don't be ridiculous, it's not (destabilising) at all," he said. "We've been copping that for several weeks now because some of the other players are leaving the club.

"We'll make comment on the players that we've signed for next season in due course when we're ready.

"We protect the confidentiality of players who are playing for other clubs and that's the way we decide to do things here; we have since we started the club."
