NEWCASTLE Jets boss Branko Culina was delighted with the fight shown by his players as they fought out a 0-0 draw with Brisbane Roar at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Sunday.
Cash problems dominated pre-match talk but the coach has been focused on trying to prepare unpaid players for 90 minutes of football.
Culina said: "We were very pleased, we fought together and we in fact went for the win with ten men because we knew that playing at home we have to try to get maximum points.
We are very pleased with the performance, under the circumstances, and I am not talking about the issues off the park, putting the team together has been really difficult this week.
"The commitment was there, particularly in the second half and even towards the last ten minutes when we were a player less, everybody dug that little bit deeper".
Pre-season recruit Kasey Wehrman was also happy with the effort, but not the outcome.
He said: "We worked hard, the fans won't be happy with the result, but they should be happy with the work rate.
"We can't just keep putting on the effort, three points is what we need".
