CENTRAL Coast Mariners striker Daniel McBreen notched up a brace of firsts with his debut goal for the club and the arrival of his first child late on Sunday night.
McBreen rushed from Bluetongue Stadium after scoring the second goal of a 2-0 win over Melbourne Victory on Friday night to be with his partner Gabrielle, and the couple welcomed baby boy Noah into the world late on Sunday night.
“It was a pretty exciting weekend,” said McBreen. “It was an eye opener and I have a newfound respect for women who give birth!
"It was good, the baby’s healthy, mum’s healthy, and so it’s pretty exciting.”
Straight back into Mariners training as the side prepares for Friday night’s huge clash against Melbourne Heart at Bluetongue Stadium, McBreen says he’s going to have to get used to functioning on late nights, early mornings and everything in between.
“No more sleep from now on," he said. "I just got off the phone to Gabby then and they said she could come home today.
"All I could hear was the little man crying in the background. They were off for a feed so I will be getting used to that.”
McBreen capped his maiden goal in Mariners colours on Friday night with a goal celebration befitting the occasion, using the ball under his shirt to symbolise the impending arrival.
He says while it was fantastic to mark his son’s birth with his first goal, it would have been nice to have been able to find the back of the net a little sooner.
“It was good timing, I would have liked to have got it in the first week of the season but there’s no time like that I guess and it topped off a great weekend,” said McBreen.
In between nappy changes and burping, McBreen will be focussing on Friday’s visit of the Heart, and says all his attention will be on ensuring the Mariners remain undefeated at their home ground in season six.
He added: “The gaffer (Graham Arnold) has said we want to make it a fortress and hopefully we can do that.
"Hopefully we can get the same result this weekend, I’ll bag another goal, and come up with a new celebration.
“I don’t know whether she’ll be taking him to the game but we’ll see, I’ll have to get him a little “Daddy number one” shirt on him!”
