Farina’s gamble to play youngsters Michael Zullo and Robbie Kruse paid major dividends on Friday with the pair bagging a goal each in the 2-1 win over Wellington Phoenix.

But he now must choose who goes in the travelling party that heads to Gosford this weekend for the clash with the Central Coast Mariners on Sunday.

With all but injured trio Andrew Packer, Ante Milicic and Tahj Minniecon available, Farina is spoiled for choice.

“Sometimes those types of decisions work well and thankfully Friday was one of those nights for us," he said today.

"I was particularly pleased for the team and the two young boys responded really well.

"We’ve been performing well all season but sometimes you need that little bit extra. Robbie and Michael certainly gave us that.”

He added: “Everyone is battling for a position in the team now.

"We may go into the Central Coast Mariners game this weekend with a different idea on how we want to play, or a different formation.

"It’s good to have 21 players that all believe and know that they will get an opportunity to play. They also know that if they take their chance when it arrives then they can aim for bigger and better things."

Farina wasdelighted with the youngsters' performance and now hopes to develop them into regular matchwinners.

“Robbie will get better and it’s a pity he had to come off with a bit of a corked thigh," he said.

"It’s his first game at this level and physically he will improve. Michael was strong and really had a sensational 70 minutes before he succumbed to cramp.

"We’ll work on that and fix them up because the pace is a lot different than they’re used to and we’ll prepare them properly for the physical demands of this level.”

Roar skipper Craig Moore, who has seen his fair share of youngsters come through the ranks at the highest level, said there was no danger of the two young guns getting carried away.

Moore and other senior members of the squad mentored the pair who have so far handled the limelight with aplomb.

“We’ve got a good dressing room where if anybody was to get above themselves, they’d be brought crashing back down fairly quickly," he said.

"But we don’t have anybody like that. They’re two young boys that have come in and taken their chance and done really well.

“They have good heads on their shoulders, but there’s a few others out there as well."

He added: "Mitch Nichols was unlucky because he’d been away with the national team, but he’s also pushing.

"These young boys that are coming through, it’s good, not only for Queensland but for Australian football as well.”

The win has put Queensland back in the mix on eight points, but more importantly for their long-suffering fans, they registered a much-needed win at home.

Farina says there’s still everything to play for and his side can now move forward with confidence as they approach the next string of fixtures, starting this weekend against current league leaders Central Coast Mariners.

“It’s fantastic that we won at home and hopefully we will look back at the end of the season and see the Wellington Phoenix game as a turning point in our season," he said.

"It’s great for the lads to get that monkey off their back. It’s still a bit of a log-jam in the league with four teams locked on eight points.

"We’re only one win off second spot and there’s no doubt that the league’s very tight."

He added: “Going into the second round of fixtures every game is a massive game for every club.

"It’s starting to get interesting and a little run of a couple of wins could really put you amongst it.
