Samba strikers Marcinho and Reinaldo had plenty of openings to put points on the board as Roar dominated Central Coast Mariners at a slippery Suncorp Stadium.

But time after time, they missed the target whenever they pulled the trigger.

“We have to take our chances,” said Farina after the match. “We’re playing some good football but tonight we couldn’t score.

“I think they’re trying too hard sometimes. They’re snapping at the ball and I think they just have to calm down. They just need one to go in.

“You’re never going to get a bucketload of chances in a game but we created enough and you have to take your chances because you’re never going to get a lot of chances.”

He added: “You can do all the training in the world but you can’t coach finishing. It has to be a natural thing.

“It’s a little bit frustrating and I think Central Coast will be feeling very relieved at the result tonight.”

Mariners manager Lawrie McKinna wasn’t so much relieved as hyper-ventilating after a rollercoaster match that saw his side steal their third win in a row against all the odds.

“I’m going to get something to restart my heart” he said afterwards. “Credit to the boys, it’s another clean sheet.

“Disappointingly we gave away the ball too much when we were rushing things but overall it’s a victory.”

He took great delight in the goal – a set piece gem with Adam Kwasnik stalking the goal outside the crowded box and rattling it home - which came straight from the training ground

“We saw that Roar crowded the box and Kwas said he would take it on,” said McKinna. “It’s very pleasing when you see something in training and put it into the game and it works.”

He was also delighted by the performance of stand-in keeper Matthew Trott, backing up for Danny Vukovic who’s away on Olyroos duty.

He put in a couple of great saves late in the match to keep the Mariners ahead.

“Trott was outstanding,” he added. “He had two or three spectacular saves in the second half. He had a bit of a groin strain going into the match but he was superb as were all the boys.”

Now he’s hoping the Mariners deadly strike force of Kwasnik, Nik Mrdja and Sasho Petrovski can continue to keep the winning streak going as the season unfolds.

“Last season there were certain games where we made a lot of chances and kept missing them,” he said. “This season with Sash and Mrdja upfront we can be confident, and it takes a bit of pressure off Kwas.

“We can go into games knowing we don’t have to create as many chances but confident that we can maybe just sneak one. There’s been a lot of hard work gone into this – and hard work goes a long way.”
