PERTH Glory interim coach Ian Ferguson has vowed to clamp down on the poor discipline that has plagued his side for much of this season.
Sitting third last on the table with just one win from their last 14 games, Glory's cause hasn't been helped by the fact they've racked up 43 yellow cards and eight reds so far this season.
Perth appeared to be in control against North Queensland Fury last Sunday before the dismissals of Naum Sekulovski and Brent Griffiths saw them reduced to nine men and forced to hold on for what proved a brave 1-1 draw under the circumstances.
For Griffiths and Sekulovski, it's their second dismissal in the last month. Both players will be suspended for Perth's next match against Central Coast Mariners on December 12, along with Mile Sterjovski, who has also accumulated five yellow cards and will be banned for one game.
Speaking on Wednesday, Ferguson said that some of the bookings may have been a trifle harsh but the coach also said he was sick of seeing his players booked for frivolous, undisciplined offences.
"It's something that I'm going to address today with them," said Ferguson. "Kicking balls away, talking back to referees, it's unacceptable now.
"I'm going to make sure that that doesn't happen again. If they get bookings then I'll be dealing with them personally."
However, the coach implored referees to show some leniency too.
"I think some of them, the decisions are pretty poor," Ferguson said.
"Surely you're allowed to talk to the referee and try and get some common sense on the decision, but if you're not allowed to do that and he's just pulling out cards 'cause you've just spoken to him, then that's crazy.
"The referees have got to try and talk to the players when they're on the park so they know what's going on."
In Sekulovski's case, a red card for a handball against Adelaide and his second booking last weekend occurred when his opponent was given too much space and the defender was forced to back track in a desperate bid to block their crosses.
"Naum sometimes gets caught the wrong side," admitted Ferguson.
"He's got to be a wee bit smarter and make sure he's getting goal side of people and make sure they're in front of him (rather) than right beside him playing the line or going behind him and that's where we've been caught.
"Unfortunately for Naum he's received the bookings and he's been sent off for us."
While Sekulovski, Griffiths and Sterjovski will all miss the Mariners game, the team will be boosted by the returns of Scott Neville and Josh Mitchell from suspension, after both were dismissed against Brisbane Roar the previous game.
However, Ferguson has some injury concerns as well that he hopes the extended rest will rectify, as Jamie Harnwell and Andy Todd look to recover from calf and hip injuries respectively.
Skipper Jacob Burns is also having treatment to a hip injury, while midfielder Adriano Pellegrino may also be a concern after receiving some physio work by the sidelines during Wednesday's light training session.
