On Wednesday night in the F3 derby, the Jets suffered two more disastrous injuries. Goalkeeper Ben Kennedy was helped off the pitch after injuring himself in the final seconds of the 1-1 draw with Central Coast.

And earlier in the game in-form defender Ljubo Milicevic sustained an injury that will see him out for two to three weeks.

These two untimely losses come on the back of a rash of striker Sean Rooney who will miss the rest of the A-League after scans revealed he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the recent  1-0 win over Wellington.

Both managers were diplomatic about the surface after Wednesday’s game but did convey veiled concern and some are blaming the pitch for these injuries.

The issue has been a nightmare since last month when a motorbike event devastated the surface. This lead to the embarrassing postponement of an A-League fixture with North Queensland just 24 hours before kick-off.

It also lead to a relocation of a second Jets A-League fixture four days later against Melbourne Heart, played in Port Mac

Those charged with relaying the surface trumpeted the new pitch saying it would be similar in design to AAMI Park in Melbourne – generally regarded as the best pitch in the league.

But the relaying has been botched with a central corridor of the surface and the rest of a what appears a patchwork surface. Worse still, the grass is loose and difficult to turn on.

When asked by au.fourfourtwo.com after the F3 derby, Jets winger Ali Abbas spoke for many when he said the park was simply not good enough.

“That’s why we have too many injured players,” the Iraqi international told au.fourfourtwo.com.

Coming from a player who is enjoying his new life in Newcastle this isn’t criticism to be dismissed lightly.

“The pitch it was really, really bad," he said. "You can’t play on that. That’s why we had Ljubo today he was injured. Very bad.”

And the question no-one in Newcastle wants to broach is: what if Beckham sustains an injury on Saturday night as a result of the pitch?

Abbas said that if that was the case, “It’s gonna be a big problem for us.”

A tired looking Beckham and his LA teammates arrived this morning at Williamtown airport and left the tarmac immediately bound for their city hotel.

Branko Culina defended the turf today, saying: "Hopefully the pitch will get better, but you can't put your finger on it and say it was the pitch that caused the injuries.

"I think (midfielder) Kasey Wehrman mentioned it the other day when he said 'I'm sure Beckham's played on worse pitches than this.

"But that's not an excuse ... our pitch for most parts is quite good, it's just in patches unfortunately it's not ideal."
