The midfielder, 23, will take possession of the armband in the absence of Barry Ferguson, who is one of several experienced players who have been rested ahead of the match at Pittodrie.

Fletcher was also stand-in skipper against Estonia in May 2004 and will take inspiration from the likes of Ferguson and Roy Keane when he assumes the role again.

"It's a great honour to captain your country," he said. "I've done it before and it's nice to do it again.

"You've got to lead the team and someone has to be captain but I look around the team that will be playing tonight and I see that there will be more than one captain on the pitch.

"That's what you want. You want as many leaders as possible on the pitch. Obviously I include myself in that and we've got others on the pitch who are going to make my job easier as well."

He added: "I take a bit out of every captain I've played under. I've played under some great captains at Manchester United and for Scotland. Barry is a great leader.

"But each captain has to be an individual, you can't go out there and copy somebody else because you are not that somebody else.

"You have to take the best bits from other captains and try to add them to your own natural leadership qualities."

Fletcher has played just 22 minutes for Manchester United this term, as the Old Trafford have club suffered an horrendous start to the campaign, and he said: "I've not had many minutes under my belt this season and I see this game as a chance to hopefully get 90 minutes.

"It would be good for me, Manchester United and Scotland."

Despite being used sparingly by Sir Alex Ferguson so far, Fletcher is confident he will be able to force his way into the manager's plans.

"I wouldn't be there if I didn't think that," he said. "I've got belief in myself, the manager has belief in me and my team-mates have belief in me.

"It's going to be a long hard season and there will be plenty of games coming up when the Champions League starts. That's when I've got to take my chance and grasp it with two hands.

"It's happened in previous seasons where I've not started the season and through time I've been given my chance and managed to work my way into the team. Hopefully I can do that again."
