EXCLUSIVE: Victory’s players will not allow off-field dramas to distract them as they bid to prove a point against Perth Glory.
The club has suspended Archie Thompson and Ljubo Milecivic for a curfew breach following round eight’s 4-1 thumping at Adelaide United.
The matter is expected to be dealt with in the next few days but it seems the issue will not be allowed to infect preparations on the training ground.
New boy winger Joseph Keenan insists the focus will be on the football as the players look to put together another unbeaten run.
While not wishing to be drawn on the discipline issue, Keenan did say: “There has been an issue raised in the press but there was no mention of it at training on Monday and it’s something that’s for the club to look at.”
Keenan’s only concern is banishing the memory of the Adelaide defeat as quickly as possible.
Basement boys Perth provide the next opposition but the former Chelsea youngster isn’t unduly concerned who Melbourne face next, he just wants to get on with the action.
He said: “Losing our unbeaten record in the way that we did was very disappointing as we were pretty proud of it.
"It took the wind out of our sails a little bit. We’d had a very good result in the previous match at Sydney and were looking to go on from there.
“Why did it happen? I think you can look at a few factors. Being without Leigh Broxham and Kevin Muscat through injury and having Grant Brebner suspended takes three key players out of your side and hampers your preparations."
He added: "I think you have to give Adelaide credit though. They did well. Teams are going to raise their game against you and it’s a cup final.
“Speaking with the lads after the game, I think one of the worst things was the wait we then had to the next game. You’ve lost on a Friday night and you have to wait nine days for a chance to put it right. It doesn’t make for the best week.”
Keenan himself can at least smile about being back to fitness again after a frustrating start to his Melbourne career.
He said: “I’m feeling good now. I suffered a hamstring tear early on, it was an unusual injury for me, I hadn’t had a problem like that before. Hopefully that’s behind me now though and I can get another 90 minutes under my belt.”
Perth await Keenan and company at the Telstra Dome this weekend. The fact Glory prop up the table is not relevant to the 25-year-old.
“We would be happy to play anyone," he said. "The boys have a point to prove after last week and we want to show that Adelaide was a blip.”
