THERE were a few dusty boots and tired limbs on display as the A-League cranked up to full speed at the start of the new season, but who were the stars who shone this weekend? Here's our team of the week - and not a Del Piero, Heskey or Ono among them...
Goalkeeper: Lawrence Thomas- Melbourne Victory
Ange Postecoglou made a brave choice in appointing Thomas as his first choice ‘keeper and it looks like it was the right choice. The Melbourne Victory custodian performed outstandingly in Victory’s 2-1 defeat to local rivals Melbourne Heart making many fantastic saves, which included denying David Williams with three superb one-one-one’s.
Right Back: Michael Marrone- Melbourne Heart
The Melbourne Heart fullback put in another solid performance on the right of Heart’s defence. Marrone showed why he is one of the most consistent defenders in the league showing great positioning and the ability to read the ball, while also provided an attacking threat, flicking onto Mate Dugandzic in the build up to Heart’s second and winning goal.
Centre Back: Nigel Boogaard- Adelaide United
Boogaard put in a strong 90 minutes in the 2-0 victory over Newcastle Jets, with partner Antony Golec, making several interceptions and clearances, which might force John Kosmina possibly to consider his first-choice centre-back pairing with Jon McKain and Iain Fyfe to return shortly.
Centre Back: Bas van den Brink- Perth Glory
Van den Brink was rock-hard at the back in the 1-0 win over Brisbane Roar with new defensive partner Michael Thwaite, making many clearances and headers, while winning the ball on many occasions with some brilliant tackles.
Left Back: Craig Goodwin- Newcastle Jets
Goodwin was one of Newcastle’s better performers in a lacklustre and poor team performance against Adelaide. The former Melbourne Heart attacking fullback ran wild down the left flank using his blistering pace and threatened the opposition box, while defending well at the back.
Centre Midfield: Liam Miller- Perth Glory
Miller was Perth’s creative spark in their win over Brisbane dictating the tempo and used his quality vision and passing game. The former Celtic man was also a huge threat on the set-pieces, which included forcing Michael Theo to tap a free-kick over the bar.
Centre Midfield: Jacob Burns- Perth Glory
With Miller, Burns was in inspiring form in such a big game, being his normal aggressive self as he let the opposition know he was on the pitch. The Glory Skipper worked hard for the win which rubbed off on his teammates as they worked for the entire 90 minutes to snatch a late victory.
Left Wing: Jeronimo Neumann- Adelaide United
The Argentine winger was a massive threat for the Reds setting up Dario Vidosic in the opening minute by winning the ball back and crossing perfectly, while causing the Newcastle defence problems with his quick pace and excellent through balls.
Attacking Midfield Centre: Dario Vidosic- Adelaide United
Vidosic was one of the weekend’s best performers opening the scoring for Adelaide with a good finish, before setting up Iain Ramsay with an inch-perfect low cross. The former Brisbane youngster was hard mark as he floated around the pitch and was the linchpin between the Reds midfield and attack in a brilliant effort.
Right Wing: Marco Rojas- Melbourne Victory
Rojas showed in the Melbourne Derby what Postecoglou has got out of the lively winger, causing Heart many problems at the back with great runs and pace, and capped his performance off with a goal to finish off a brilliant Victory team move.
Striker: Dylan Macallister- Melbourne Heart
Macallister continued his impressive preseason form into the season opener getting on the end of a low Mate Dugandzic cross. The former Gold Coast striker caused Victory many problems all over the park with his strength and body size, but should have had a hat-trick as he butchered a couple other chances.
Coach: John Aloisi- Melbourne Heart
Aloisi in his senior coaching debut steered his Melbourne Heart to a win over Postecoglou’s Victory with impressive tactics. The former Socceroo did plenty of homework and defeated Victory with a pressing tactic, causing the two time A-League Champions to cough up the ball allowing his side to hit Victory on the counter.
