PASSION is not a crime - and Victory and Wanderers fans showed it with spirited off-field displays, which was rewarded by players on the field. Perhaps some struggling teams just need is a 12th man like that... But who made our penultimate team of the week for 2012?
GK: Nathan Coe
In a weekend where there were less goalkeeping heroics than in other weeks, Coe stood out from the pack. Kept Victory in the game with some great saves - Heart could and perhaps should have put the game away before the late-game heroics.
RB: Leo Bertos
Improving every week in his new position, marshalled the dangerous Mariners attack very well and overlapped well down his side.
LB: Adama Traore
May as well write this man's name in every week. A virtuoso performance down the left wing in defence and attack. Plenty of people starting to talk about that Socceroo callup I mooted last week...
CB: Bas Van Den Brink
Did very well in his side's second half bus-parking at Suncorp. Unbeatable in the air and excellent on the ground. With himself and his ex-Gold Coast United partner Michael Thwaite in form like we saw on Friday night it will be difficult to keep Glory from title contention.
CB: Trent Sainsbury
Another week, another selection for Sainsbury. Exceptional alongside Zwaanswijk for the Mariners - problem was, those two were the only two playing up to their usual standard. Deflections, blocked shots, interceptions and tackles everywhere. Another man this column would love to see get a crack at the 'Roos.
RM: Youssouf Hersi
The first of a few West Sydney players Wandering into this week's column. He destroyed Cassio down the right wing and in the process laid on four goals. Not a bad night's work, eh?
LM: Craig Goodwin
He and James Virgili were clear standouts down the flanks for the Jets in a game very lacking in quality overall. Goodwin gets the nod for me because of his dangerous delivery from set pieces.
CDM: Mateo Poljak
For the second week in a row, arguably the Wanderers best player in a strong performance. Equally adept at distribution and destruction, he's been instrumental in the Wanderers sudden click into goal-scoring gear. Let's hope he continues his momentum - along with the rest of the team.
CAM: Shinji Ono
Not surprisingly, his best performance in the A-League. Rendered the in-form Osama Malik a passenger - and was at the heart of most of Wanderers' best attacks. As the season rolls on, bypassing Del Piero and Heskey in the value for money stakes.
ST: Zlatmark Bridgahimovic
Wanderers first goal-scorer - Mark Bridge. Wanderers first multiple goal-scorer - Mark Bridge. Wanderers first ever hat-trick - Mark Bridge. And what a hat-trick it was - clinical finishing par excellence. Even managed to develop some sort of partnership with Dino Kreisinger! Wonders will never cease!
ST: Archie Thompson
Although absent for much of the game, scored one of the most important goals of Victory's season to win the game and set off amazing scenes in the stands of AAMI Park.
Coach: Tony Popovic
Coach of the season so far, Tony's team started delivering goals on Friday night to add to their collection of solid team performances. He can take a lot of credit for their continued rise up the table, whether or not they stay there - and for how he has assembled and organised this rag-tag collection of outcasts into a competitive unit.
Referee: Jared Gillett
Controlled a feisty and eventful game with very few errors - and those did not impact the flow of the game. A couple of weekends in a row where the referees have been much better than usual - Alan Milliner deserves a special mention for controlling a feisty Melbourne Derby with confidence and aplomb.
