NORTH Queensland Fury chairman Don Matheson has blamed a 'misunderstanding' for the weekend row between marquee striker Robbie Fowler and coach Ian Ferguson.
But he insisted today that the issue had been cleared up and that both Fowler and Ferguson will still see out their contracts at the club.
Speculation has been rampant that Fowler would quit the club this week after he defied Ferguson and refused to play, instead of taking a place on the bench for the weekend's crucial game against Brisbane Roar.
A running feud between the former England striker and first-time coach Fergie has been simmering all season until this weekend's public blow-up.
Fowler admitted last week that his family has struggled to settle in Townsville and he has repeatedly been linked with a possible return to England.
But Fowler has always insisted he would see out his two year contract and spurned offers from British clubs for a return to the UK earlier in the season.
And this afternoon the club insisted Ferguson and Fowler would continue to work together and see out their contracts.
"I've spoken to them today and realise there has been a misunderstanding," said Matheson.
"Ian wanted to play a particular formation and that included utilising Robbie as an impact player off the bench and Robbie believed he wasn't part of the squad - and there has been an unfortunate outcome because of that misunderstanding.
"We've sorted that out and there is now a clear commitment from both Ian and Robbie to try to win our three remaining matches of the season, starting with the Newcastle Jets this weekend.
"The club apologises to the fans here in the North and across the competition for what's happened, but moving forward I am happy that we've been able to resolve this in the best interests of the club and the game."
He added: "Robbie is getting pretty tired of the speculation that he will be leaving North Queensland Fury FC. He is not leaving the club.
"He and his family have made some sacrifices for him to play for North Queensland - as have all the players - and he's happy with his decision."
