EXCLUSIVE: Three months ago Hiro Moriyasu was an amateur footballer living in a Sydney hostel – today he was unveiled as Sydney FC’s latest signing for the new A-League season.
Moriyasu, 25, a versatile former J3 midfielder, has inked a one-year deal with the A-League champions from Leichhardt Tigers in the NSW premier league.
Tigers Chairman Tony Raciti told au.fourfourtwo.com that Moriyasu impressed from day one after turning up for Leichhardt training around three months ago.
"After his [Moriyasu] first training session a few players rang and told me to sign him up," said Raciti. "I asked some of the senior players and they agreed totally with the assessment.
"They said double it. In the NSW Premier League, no-one comes close to him."
Moriyasu has been deployed as a defensive midfielder at Leichhardt but has been able to score five goals in the role.
He's equally comfortable in a more attacking role say the club and it's this versatility that helped him gain his dream contract with the A-League champions.
Playing for the Tigers was part of Moriyasu's masterplan to make it in the A-League. He came to Australia from amateur J3 club Mitsubishi Mizushima on the search for a new football adventure.
After living in a hostel near Leichhardt he turned up for Tigers training and the rest is history. And today at a café near Leichhardt, he was still coming to terms with his A-League new contract.
"My purpose was to be with an A-League team so I'm very happy right now," he said today. "You can't really compare it [A-League] to J3, its outstanding facilities, coaching staff. It's unbelievable.
"I wanted to play in a foreign country to create an experience outside of Japan."
Moriyasu also revealed he was on the verge of quitting football to become a "normal person" but added: "There was something inside me clicked. So I just bought a ticket and came to Australia."
Sydney coach Vitezslav Lavicka suggested fans would see Moriyasu play in some of next week's high profile Sydney Festival of Football against Glasgow Rangers, Blackburn Rovers and AEK.
Moriyasu signs for Sydney as their third visa player but he's not their first Japanese player. Famously in season one of the A-League "King Kazu" Kazuyoshi Miura signed a successful short term deal as a guest player.
"I can't really compare to the legend of Japan King Kazu," admited Hiro."I've got to do well because King Kazu was with Sydney FC and everyone thinks he represents Japan. I hope to also do that."
Moriyasu may provide handy inside knowledge when Sydney FC next year embark on their first ACL campaign since 2007.
"He's a versatile player, same type as we have been looking for," added Lavicka.
However, the sky blues' search for a target-man continues. Over 80 strikers have been looked at with the club conceding they may start the new A-League season without this elusive last piece in the squad's jigsaw.
Sydney FC vice chairman Scott Barlow admitted: "It's about getting the right player, not about getting a player for the start of the season."
