EXCLUSIVE: Iain Fyfe believes extra attacking quality rather than poor defending is the reason for the A-League’s early season goal explosion.

The first three rounds have seen 45 goals scored and the Sydney FC defender believes there is a sharper edge in the final third of the pitch.
Sydney have scored eight goals in their last two games with Fyfe and his fellow backline breached four times.
Fyfe told au.fourfourtwo.com: “It’s been healthy for the league, everyone wants goals. It’s great for the fans because it means the fans will come back knowing they’re in for a lot of entertainment and end to end action.
“It’s not so good for the defenders but as long as Sydney’s the one scoring lots of goals and not conceding many I’m happy with that.”
Fyfe believes all the A-League coaches have done well with their recruitment of strikers and accepts defenders are going to have to work incredibly hard to nullify the threats this season.
He said: “I think the quality of forwards has definitely improved across the board. Everyone has got real quality in their strikeforce.
“Perth, who we played last week, look to have done well with their (strikers) imports and Melbourne Victory, who already have Archie Thompson and Danny Allsopp have strengthened again with Ney Fabiano.
“We’ll certainly have our work cut out (as defenders) wherever we go.”
But Fyfe is confident that Sydney have the defenders in their squad to make life hard for opposing forwards and he feels the ability to switch positions along the backline is an important weapon in the locker.
He said: “We’re pretty comfortable whatever Kossie chooses to play. We’ve got quite a good understanding as defenders. The main thing to work on is positioning and talking and if you get those right that’s probably half the battle.
“As a defender it’s vitally important to be able to play different positions, it’s just the way football has gone. These days it’s no longer a case you can only play one position and that’s it.
“We’ll continue to work on things though as we prepare for the Newcastle game but yes, it’s been a great start for us and we’d have taken seven points out of nine.”
