FORMER Championship-winning Newcastle Jets coach Gary van Egmond has officially returned to the club for a second stint in charge on a two year deal with an option for a third.
van Egmond, 46, takes the reins from sacked Branko Culina who was dismissed by owner Nathan Tinkler on the day of the A-League launch, just four days out from the start of the season in a row over the marquee star signing of his injured son Jason.
van Egmond first took control charge of the side in 2006 when he transformed a long losing run into a team of winners, and followed that up the next season with the Championship trophy.
However cost-cutting by previous owner Con Constantine saw an exodus of talent from ther squad and van Egmond suffered the indignity of going from hero to zero by collecting the wooden spoonthe following season.
He left for a job at the AIS and the FFA amod threats of legal action from Constantine and has since been part of the Autralian national youth teams set up.
Today the club confirmed van Egmond's appointment for the new season, replacing caretaker coach Craig Deans who will retain control for this week's local derby against Central Coast Mariners.
He will then returns to his youth team duties next week when can Egmond assumes full control.
Jets chief executive Robbie Middleby was confident all members, fans and corporate partners would welcome van Egmond's appointment
"We had a short-list of excellent applicants but in a purely objective process, Gary scored high in all the important criteria,” Middleby said.
“On behalf of the club, members and supporters, we welcome him back to Newcastle."
