"I feel very privileged to be the coach of the Newcastle Jets and it is wonderful to be extending my time here for at least another year," van Egmond said.

"I see a bright future, for this season and for many years to come, in both the development of the players and in the total culture of the club.

"It is exciting times for the Newcastle Jets ... we have a great representation of local talent in our senior group and near 100 percent in our youth team.

"We have a great membership base, the second largest in the A-League, which shows how passionate our supporters are and I hope to be able to equal their passion."

Newcastle chief executive Robbie Middleby hailed van Egmond's positive influence on the Jets squad.

"Gary fits the mould of what we are doing at the Jets and we have faith that he is continuing to build a team in which Newcastle can be proud," he said.

"It is encouraging for our young playing group to have an outstanding coach that is committed to the Jets for another season."

The Jets finished seventh in the 2011/12 A-League season, missing the finals by two points.
