EXCLUSIVE: Fans will welcome back former hero Shane Smeltz (and his goals) with open arms if he agrees a second stint with Gold Coast United after his China crisis.
Smeltz looked to have said goodbye to United a week ago after securing a switch to the Chinese Super League.
However, just five days into the move he decided it was not for him and his family and returned to Australia.
A second stint with United has yet to be confirmed with talks ongoing between the two parties, but should Smeltz agree to start the season in Gold Coast colours then the Skilled Park faithful won't be complaining.
"All the comments I've heard (about Smeltz coming back) have been pretty positive," Gold Coast United Supporters Club secretary Terry Hands told au.fourfourtwo.com today.
"I think most fans were expecting him to leave and wished him well. I don't think they'd knock him back (if he re-signs). How long (he stays) for, time will tell.
"Obviously, you want a player back who is committed."
But whether Smeltz signs on the dotted line for a lengthy spell or only for a shorter period, the United faithful are feeling optimistic about the season ahead.
Hands added: "I think we're all looking forward to that first game against Brisbane Roar and we've a good chance of going better than last year."
