Now unbeaten in five outings, United closed the gap on front-runners Adelaide and will play the current leaders in their next fixture at Skilled Park on October 17.

Coach Miron Bleiberg was naturally delighted with his first win over Wellington, but revealed after the game that he had some stern words for his troops at the halfway mark of the match.

"I was upset at half time because we were trying too hard and we didn't play to our strengths in the first half," he said.

"We scored a beautiful goal then let them back into the game and we could have been behind had the referee allowed the ‘offside' goal to stand.

"Even though they were all trying hard and putting in maximum effort, some players were doing things that were not their responsibility, but we fixed all that during the break and were much better in the second 45 minutes.

"Sometimes as a coach you have to be like a chess player and make a move on your opponent, so we made the two substitutions and it worked well because the boys responded.

"We added some additional attacking players and managed to get a grip on the game.

"As the match progressed we got stronger and stronger and I thought we produced some entertaining football.

"It was a very important win for us and even by the end of this round [of fixtures] we should still be up around the top three.

"Our next game is here at Skilled Park against Adelaide so this result sets that match up nicely."

Bleiberg reserved praise for new striker Bruce Djite who has worked his way into a goalscoring purple patch having netted three times in two matches.

Djite produced two clinical finishes, the first of which in the fifth minute was the end product of a flowing move comprising of fifteen consecutive passes.

"Bruce took his goals really well and with the players he has around him he will continue to get goals because there will be chances created for him," he said.

"He showed today that if he gets the right service he will score goals. Not only that, he also does an enormous amount of hard work for the team."
