Perth Glory have signed highly rated Australian international Nick Rizzo for the next two seasons.
Rizzo spent the last 11 years playing overseas including stints with Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Milton Keynes Dons in England as well as four seasons in Italy.
The goal scoring winger rejected several offers to remain in Europe and said he is enthusiastic about making his Hyundai A-League debut with Perth.
“The A-League has been a fantastic success and has created a really strong national competition,” Rizzo said.
“After speaking with the coaching staff at Perth Glory I saw an excellent opportunity to come back to Australia and play at a great club which I believe is definitely on the way up,” he added.
The skillful left footer represented Australia at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and has one Socceroos cap to his name.
Rizzo believes playing in the Hyundai A-League under Glory coaches Ron Smith and David Mitchell will enable him to again push for a recall to the national squad.
“While I’d love to have another chance to play with the Socceroos, my primary focus is to play consistent football for Perth and the rest will take care of itself,” he said.
Perth Glory coach Ron Smith is delighted the talented 27 year old has committed to the club after several months of discussions and believes Rizzo’s experience and goal scoring knack will be a huge boost for the Glory this season.
“He’s a very versatile player who has played predominantly wide on the left but also has the ability to play as a striker. He has a great engine and terrific pace with the capacity to put it in the back of the net regularly,” Smith said.
“He’s a bubbly character and I’m sure he will fit in really well with the other lads and quickly become a fan favourite,” Smith added.
Rizzo will join his new team mates after his wedding in mid June. Perth Glory has 20 contracted players for the Hyundai A-League 2007/08 season.
