PERTH Glory have made it their priority to re-sign Andy Todd and Victor Sikora, with many clubs already making moves to snap up players who are out of contract at the end of the season.
The club has some important players coming out of contract, including first-team regulars Todd, Sikora and Wayne Srhoj, and fringe players Jamie Coyne and Eugene Dadi.
Some of these would be big targets for the other A-League teams, including new franchise Melbourne Heart which is looking to build a squad for their inaugural season next year.
Glory coach Dave Mitchell confirmed the club would look to quickly re-sign Todd and Sikora but wouldn't be drawn on the other players.
"We are in the midst of negotiations, there's a couple of decisions we need to make in the next couple of weeks. We've got priorities, and we want make sure we lock them away first, then we will work our way down the list," he said.
Yesterday Mitchell reflected on the first half of the season where, despite some good performances, his side has been guilty of some defensive lapses which has cost them some games.
"I think we've made a lot of mistakes," he said. "We've highlighted that to the players and that's where we can make that go away in the second half of the season.
"The biggest plus is that I think we've played some great football at times. I think the fans coming back and supporting the club has been great. We're sitting in a position where everyone is in sort of a mood where we will make the finals.
"We're in a good position, but we're not getting carried away. We want a good run at home and we have certainly got a lot of good players at the club and we just have to make sure we get into the finals - that's something we want to ram home to players."
When asked about his standout players so far this season, Mitchell pointed to the defensive pairing of Todd and Chris Coyne, and captain Jacob Burns.
On Burns, Mitchell said: "A lot of things that Jacob does people don't really realise, but he works his socks off and screens the defence. People only see the fancy football but he does a lot of work in the midfield."
Mitchell felt Glory marquee man Mile Sterjovski, who has scored four goals in the A-League and won back a spot in the national squad, had played a role for the club and had "made a lot things happe
"He himself knows he could probably play better, but it takes time for people to settle into new countries and there's probably more pressure on strikers to score goals than any other position," added Mitchell.
