THE absence of star striker Shane Smeltz could do nothing to dull Perth Glory’s attacking intent with the A-League side putting five unanswered goals past Football West Premier League leaders Bayswater City at Frank Drago Reserve on Saturday.
A brace by Billy Mehmet and goals each by Travis Dodd, Steve McGarry and Adrian Zahra, meant the rested New Zealand international was hardly missed in a performance that ticked all the right boxes for coach Ian Ferguson.
“I was delighted with the first half and the way we moved the ball,” Ferguson said.
“We were patient again, we made some great runs and we created numerous opportunities.
“Things are going well at the moment and we still have five games to go (in pre-season) so we will take it from there.”
The Glory roared out of the blocks from the opening whistle and were ahead within two minutes after Mehmet headed home a Scott Jamieson cross.
Jamieson and Dean Heffernan were a constant headache for the Bayswater boys down the left flank and combined to set up Glory’s second, with Dodd volleying home on the 18th minute.
McGarry made it 3-0 to Perth before the break.
In the second half, substitute Zahra continued his fine pre-season form and wasted no time making his mark with a sublime lofted pass to set up Mehmet, who coolly chipped the keeper on 58 minutes to secure his second of the match. Zahra then turned scorer 10 minutes later to seal the 5-0 win.
