SEVERAL hundred children have attended a coaching clinic run by staff of Perth Glory and the Platinum Stars on a remote hilltop with sweeping views of Kruger National Park.
The inspirational session with youngsters aged from 3 to 16 took place on a state-of-the-art 3G artificial pitch funded through FIFA’s Legacy grassroots program.
Many of the children were either orphans or in the care of grandparents due the ravages of HIV and AIDS on their communities.
Perth easily accounted for the Platinum Stars 3-0 on Friday night, but the coaches were clearly on the same side when it came to putting the local children through their paces.
Glory’s team manager Ian Gillan, Willie McNally and Community Development Manager Callum Salmon all took leading roles in the clinic.
Groups participated in passing, shooting and possession drills before breaking into small-sided games with plenty of energy, enthusiasm and sublime ball skills on show.
The coaching session took place near the Mozambique border and about 60kms from Glory’s pre-season training base at the Ingwenyama Resort in South Africa - a humbling but memorable experience for the coaching staff of both clubs.
“It was a privilege to be able to come here today and hopefully give something to these children that they enjoyed and will remember,” Salmon said.
“Their enthusiasm and skill level was fantastic and they were just a joy to work with.”
Platinum Stars assistant goalkeeping coach Stefan Ekakala agreed: “I’ve enjoyed every moment of this session today.
“You could see how much it meant to the kids, some of whom had walked for miles just to get here and join in.
“I’m really grateful to have had the opportunity to come here and work with these kids.”
No one left empty-handed; each child received a t-shirt and cap and after lunch the youngsters entertained the coaching staff with their pitch-perfect singing.
