“It's called Gold Coast United because it's uniting a league of players and teams...it’s a united team from the Gold Coast, and hopefully extending into northern NSW,” GC United boss Clive Palmer told au.fourfourtwo.com.

Football Far North Coast officials were at Friday's announcement of Palmer's Gold Coast bid winning a place in the A-League starting 2009.

FFNC see their region, with over 6000 registered players, as being part of the Gold Coast’s support-base.

“Many of our locals travel to Brisbane [to see Queensland Roar], but it's a real day trip. Now, this will be their club. It's only around an hour's drive,” said FFNC general manager Matt Kelso.

He added that Newcastle Jets have not yet utilized his area for promotional purposes, opening the door for the Gold Coast to move in.

“So, potentially there'll be fans coming from as far south as Coffs Harbour to now see A-League football,” he said.

Palmer, for one, is hopeful that the Gold Coast’s neat geographical location gives the club an even bigger fan base to call on.

“We want them to come along. To be a good team you need a good team to support. It's a whole thing that's required to win the A-League from the community,” said Palmer.

And Gold Coast United looms as a haven for Aussie football fans – visiting and local - with arguably the best stadium in the league right now.

Steep, one-tier seating and a rectangular configuration gives the fans the feeling of being right on top of the action. And the design means noise does not escape, rather it reverberates back onto the pitch.

Stadium officials also said visiting A-League fans would be easily catered for. As they do with NRL fans, there will be shuttle buses on match day leaving from the main beachside locations down the Gold Coast to take fans the 10-15mins inland to the stadium at Robina.

The ground is also serviced by a train line 100m from the ground for fans travelling to and from Brisbane. Robina also has a regular bus service.

And with a capacity of 27,000, the stadium will enjoy an excellent atmosphere with officials estimating an average attendance of around 15,000 for season one (bigger for the Sydney and Roar clashes).

“We've got the World Cup coming on and this is a great opportunity to be inspired by some of the things they'll be seeing [at Gold Coast United] over the next two or three years,” said Palmer.

“So we hope they'll come along.”
