GOLD Coast United boss Miron Bleiberg is resigned to losing Shane Smeltz before the start of the season after the All Whites striker's World Cup displays.
While there is no offer on the table for Smeltz yet, a clause in the 28-year-old's contract means he can make a move if he wants.
"Shane is negotiating with several clubs and there is every possibility he could leave and if that is the case we would wish him well," Bleiberg said.
"He's been great for us but he has a clause in his contract which guarantees a release and the club has never sought to force him to stay if he wants to further his career elsewhere."
The two-time A-League Golden Boot winner has had offers in the past few years thanks to his scoring feats for Wellington Phoenix and Gold Coast United.
In South Africa, he scored New Zealand's only goal in a 1-1 draw with Italy, but Bleiberg confirmed there was yet to be an offer but it may just be a matter of time given his meagre $300,000 buyout clause in Smeltz's three-year contract.
"It's obviously best for us if things are sorted out ... and of course we want to hold on to him because he's a born goal scorer which no A-League club would want to lose," said Bleiberg.
The last time Smeltz spoke about a possible move was in South Africa, and while he was hopeful, he indicated he was happy at United.
"Hopefully I will get noticed,' he said. "Every player wants to play at the highest level they can and make the most out of what is a short career in football, so I'm hopeful that something might come up.
"If not then I'll be happy to stay at United. I am content on the Coast and so is my family. It's where I grew up, so we will wait and see."
