The man with the financial clout behind Gold Coast United is looking beyond establishing a club to be the A-League's very best.

As the franchise waits to hear whether it will be accepted into the A-League for season five - with all the indications being that it will - Palmer won't be content with building one successful club. He wants to help build a code that dominates the sporting scene.

He toldwww.goldcoast.com.au: "Football is the game of the future, it's skilful, safer than the others and it's the one the world plays.

"It's about finesse rather than overt aggression and it's the game the parents want their kids to be playing.

"I aim to play any part I can in making it number one in Australia and having a team in the league that does well and wins in style will go some way to achieving that ambition.

"It will take time but I feel there's an inevitability, so long as things are done right, that football becomes the most popular code of them all."

Gold Coast United CEO Clive Mensink shares Palmer's vision with a desire to build United into a club with very strong local roots.

He said: "The aim will be to have up to six or seven Gold Coast-raised players in the team within 10 years or so, this is about giving them something to aspire to that's right on their doorstep.

"Our team will be all about balance. Initially we'll have to rely on players from beyond this region and from overseas but the commitment will always be to nurturing the youngsters in co-operation with Gold Coast Soccer."
