EXCLUSIVE: Melbourne Heart defender Craig Goodwin’s planned move to Newcastle Jets remains on hold after the Hunter club’s well-publicised licence woes as the red and whites hold off on signing any new players.
The 20-year-old attacking left-sided player is currently back in the VPL with Oakleigh but is believed to have wanted to join the Jets at season's end in order to reunite with his former coaching mentor Arthur Papas.
Goodwin was on an amateur contract with Heart this season after signing from Oakleigh to Heart's NYL team, coached by Papas who later left to become an assistant at the Jets.
However, Goodwin finally got his chance and made a huge name for himself in February’s Melbourne derby against Victory.
With Aziz Behich on Olyroos duty, the 20-year-old registered a man-of-the-match performance in his A-League debut.
Goodwin marked Harry Kewell for periods of the game and the new Heart star almost scored with a stunning late strike, saved by Ante Covic as the game finished 0-0.
“He’d indicated that there was an offer from Newcastle Jets for him but I’m not sure where that’s at, at the moment,” said Heart’s Football Operations Manager John Didulica.
“There’s no question he did well for us last season but I don’t want to pre-empt anything.”
While Goodwin caught the eye, he would be in competition for a regular spot with Behich who is being touted as a future Socceroo left back.
That is Goodwin’s dilemma but at this stage Heart aren't making any new signings until a new club coach is appointed in around two weeks time.
That said, Heart are continuing to work through their various player and agent networks in preparation for a recruiting swoop in the near future.
And with the release of Dutchman Rutger Worm and Brazilian Alex Terra, Heart have freed up a couple of high-end foreign spots to build a team around in their final third, explained Didulica.
“We really want to make sure we get those recruitments right because whatever happens with those two positions will impact on what happens with the rest of the recruiting in terms of what sort of players we need to complement those guys," he said.
“But nothing will actually happen until the head coach is appointed."
He added that it didn’t matter which country the two key players hailed from but what they’d bring to the red and whites.
“And the new coach will have his own network too so hopefully we can find the right players to potentially bring in,” he said.
Didulica also confirmed no Heart players would seek loan deals to keep them in match shape during the long Australian off-season.
As for Clint Bolton’s much speculated future plans, Didulica reiterated that the club would love him to stay next season.
“But it’s not a simple debate like you have with other players,” Didulica said of the popular Aussie goalkeeping legend, who will turn 37 next season but who has been in stunning form this season.
Heart’s final training session for the year will be held tomorrow (Thursday) before the players take a six-week break.
