PERTH striker Jamie Harnwell is set to become the Glory’s games record holder after the club secured his services with a new two year contract that will take him through until the end of the 2009/10 season.
Harnwell, who has played 207 matches for the Glory, sits third on the all time list behind former club greats Scott Miller (211) and Bobby Despotovski (241).
After topping Perth’s scoring for the second consecutive season Harnwell was a much sought after commodity in the A-League and Coach Dave Mitchell said he is delighted to have the 30 year old commit to the club.
“Jamie Harnwell epitomises Perth Glory, he is passionate about this club and displays great character amongst the group. He will play a very important role for us over the next couple of seasons,” said Mitchell.
Harnwell, who has played predominately upfront in the past couple of seasons after previously plying his trade as a defender, will continue to be used as an attacking spearhead next season under Mitchell.
“There was a lot of interest in Jamie, which wasn’t surprising after his goal scoring exploits in the past few campaigns.
“His scoring ability is outstanding and has become a quality finisher. He knows how to get on the end of crosses that many other people wouldn’t be able to get to.
“Jamie is also versatile enough to play a role at the back if needed and is more than willing to put his body on the line at either end of the pitch. That is exactly what I’ll be asking of each and every person wearing the Perth Glory strip next season and Jamie will be a leader in that cause,” Mitchell said.
Born and bred in Western Australia, Harnwell joined Perth Glory from local club Sorrento in the 1998/99 season and has enjoyed a long and successful career and entrenched himself as a fan favourite. He has won two NSL Championships with Perth, twice been named Best Clubman and is the Glory’s A-League leading scorer with 18 goals.
“To have a home grown player of his calibre at the club is fantastic and I am confident this is the first of many positive signings for next season and beyond,” Mitchell said.
The club remains in discussions with several other players and details will be released once negotiations are complete.
