Kewell, 34, who captained the Heart two weeks ago in their pre-season hit-out against Brisbane Roar, was confirmed as skipper by Aloisi at a press conference in the Melbourne CBD on Wednesday morning.

Aloisi revealed at Kewell's first presser in July that a decision on captain would be made after pre-season, but the club decided to bring the announcement forward.

“I’m excited to announce that Harry will be our captain for the up and coming season,” Aloisi said.

“The past two months Harry has shown the leadership qualities that we’re looking for in a captain.

“He’s been a positive influence on and off the pitch with the players. He leads by example and on the training pitch he sets high standards and he demands that all the players follow.”

Kewell revealed that he is honoured to have been offered the captaincy but expects his teammates to share the responsibilities.

“I believe that when you’re out there it’s not only me that’s captain,” he added.

“We have a whole squad that are leaders and I believe that we need to go out there and all be captains on the day.

“If I’m not pulling my weight I want my players to turn around and say to me ‘come on, do this’.

“Yes, I’m out there and I’ve got the armband, but like I said I want everyone to be out there and be leaders.”

Despite captaining his country on a number of occasions, this will be the first time Kewell captains a side at club level.

“I’ve never taken it (the captaincy) at club level so for me this is a first time thing which I’m very honoured to accept,” Kewell added.

“I’ve played under some great captains in my career and I’ve learnt from them so hopefully I can call upon a few things that they’ve done as captain and bring that to Melbourne Heart.”

The former Leeds United, Liverpool and Galatasaray midfielder’s first A-League game in red and white will be against another one of his former clubs, Melbourne Victory in the Melbourne derby at Etihad Stadium.

Despite talk of Brazil 2014, Harry’s intentions are solely to perform for Melbourne Heart for now with aims of bringing home the clubs first piece of silverware.

“I know what I want to achieve and that’s the title," he said. "I dream big, I think big, and that’s what I want to achieve,” said Kewell.

Kewell becomes the club's third captain after Simon Colosimo and Fred, both of who were released following last season's disappointing campaign.

Melbourne Heart CEO Scott Munn also revealed that Melbourne Heart and Westpac have extended their partnership for a further three years.
