The two sides met in a Euro 2012 qualifier but the match was stopped after just six minutes because of violence led by a group of Serbian fans at the Luigi Ferraris stadium.

"Certainly, we will return to play in Genoa," said FIGC general director Antonello Valentini.

"We didn't make a mistake by choosing Genoa for the game against Serbia. Of course, what happened makes you reflect but Genoa's stadium is in the norm and regularly hosts Serie A, Champions League and Europa League games.

"There was no type of warning, we could not have predicted such an escalated violence."

Police made numerous arrests and Serbia's ambassador to Rome apologised.

European football's governing body have opened an investigation and the case is set to be heard on October 28.

Valentini is confident that Italy will escape punishment.

"We expect with confidence UEFA's verdict," said Valentini. "We believe we followed with the Italian police, all the rules at international level."
