The 33-year-old arrived in Sydney yesterday and has signed a one-year deal with Gary Van Egmond’s side.

He is expected to train later in the day with his new Jets teammates, but is already tipped to miss the first three or four rounds until he is match fit.

Jardel promises to be either an inspired signing or a disaster, depending on how you read his resume.

He has been one of Europe’s deadliest strikers with a goal-a-game average at the peak of his career in the late 90s, twice picking up the European Golden Boot award.

And he’s played for big European clubs like FC Porto, Benfica, Sporting Lisbon and won the European Super Cup with Galatasaray, scoring twice in the final against Real Madrid.

But it’s a career that’s seen him struggle with his fitness in recent years.

His spell at Bolton was desperately disappointing. Just two years after scoring 42 goals in his debut season with Sporting, he failed to find the net once in any league game for Bolton.

And there have been well publicised personal problems allegedly concerning drug use and depression.

He last played a month ago in a trial match with Scottish club St Mirren.

However, with 10 caps for Brazil there’s no doubt he has rare quality. Jets football director Remo Nogarotto described the signing as “phenomenal”.

The last big name overseas player Nogarotto brought out to Australia was Nicola Berti, signed by Nogarotto for NSL club Northern Spirit seven years ago.

The former Italian national team star and Inter Milan player promised much but delivered virtually nothing.

Jets fans will be hoping they've got Super Mario the football genius, not Super Mario the fat plumber.
