EXCLUSIVE: Newcastle Jets striker Marko Jesic is facing further injury heartache as he stares down the barrel of a third knee reconstruction.
The 19-year-old will see a surgeon next week and boss Gary van Egmond admits it is an anxious time for player and club.
"It is a major concern and there is the chance that Marko is looking at another knee reconstruction. He will go and see the medical people on Wednesday but there is something on the graph that shows the cruciate is not intact," van Egmond told au.fourfourtwo.com.
Jesic first tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while playing for the Australian Institute of Sport in February 2007. He recovered, only to suffer the same injury in his left knee several months later.
He damaged his right knee again in a match against Central Coast Mariners in December last year but after initial fears of yet another reconstruction, surgeons opted to wait and see if the problem would settle down.
Jesic worked hard in the gym and resumed running in February. His recovery was such that he forced his way back into the team for the Asian Champions League campaign.
However, knee problems have sidelined him again and he will again be absent as the Jets face Beijing Guoan tomorrow night.
The youngster was also expected to be part of van Egmond's A-League plans for season five as well as juggling that with Qantas Under 20s duties.
While the Jets hold their breath over Jesic, there is at least one piece of positive injury news for van Egmond.
"Song Jin-Hyung has been given the all-clear to start running again today so that will give us another option," said van Egmond.
