NEWCASTLE Jets coach Branko Culina has admitted the club's financial crisis affected some of his players in the side's gritty 0-0 draw with Brisbane Roar yesterday.
The Jets squad went into the match without having been paid for three weeks and uncertain of the fate of the embattled club, but they put in a spirited performance against an in-form Brisbane outfit.
Newcastle's defence shut down the Roar attack until giving up a couple of late chances after Jets midfielder Ruben Zadkovich was sent from the field for his second yellow card in the 81st minute.
And although Brisbane went closest to scoring when Reinaldo headed Matt McKay's corner into the underside of the crossbar in the 50th minute, it was Newcastle that created more chances in front of goal without going on to get a winner.
"I was very pleased with the performance under the circumstances," Culina said after the match.
"We had a chat to the club on Tuesday and we agreed that we would play the game and not look for any excuses that would put the game into jeopardy and from there on, we were focused.
"You try and not let it bother you but you can't help it – you get up in the morning and you read the papers, you are driving in your car and you hear the radio or see the TV and it is about no longer having Newcastle around, so it does play up on people's minds.
"There is no doubt some might have been affected but it in the end we just wanted to go out there and play the game."
Culina acknowledged that his side ‘lacked spark' in the final third, but praised the Jets' enthusiastic spirit and gritty defensive effort, especially having the play the last 10 minutes a man down.
"We pride ourselves on playing good football, unfortunately today maybe we didn't play as well as we would have liked," he said.
"But we respected the opposition and we were ready for them and the commitment was there, particularly in the final 10 minutes when we were a player less. Everyone dug that little bit deeper.
"We fought to the end and in fact we went for the win with 10 men because playing at home you have to try and get maximum points."
Culina said he was generally buoyed by his side's performance but indicated that he was still concerned about the future of the club, with an announcement imminent early.
He added: "We agreed as a group that we would play this game and give (Jets owner) Con (Costantine) and FFA every opportunity to sort this situation out.
"We are expecting to hear over the next couple of days what is going on. Everyone put their hand up this week to play which was terrific to see.
"And I am very confident and optimistic that if issues off the park can be resolved that we will get it right on the park soon."
