Jason underwent major knee surgery during the off-season and was on the verge of a much-anticipated return several weeks ago when he identified pain in his knee.

His original cartilage procedure was a success but due to the alignment in his knee he now requires a further operation.

Jets CEO Rob Middleby confirmed the new operation is a completely new procedure and he was disappointed for the Socceroo mid-fielder, his teammates, club members and all to the club's sponsors and corporate partners.

"We will not be adding to our squad in the short term but be relying on our strategy of developing and promoting home grown products to give them a chance to shine in the Hyundai A-League," he said.

"This policy has already been showing dividends with development of exciting new players like James Virgilli, Jacob Pepper and Taylor Regan who are undefeated after 10 trial games.”

Culina will undergo surgery next week and remains optimistic of the season ahead for the Jets.

"In consultation with the Club, I have made this decision to have the operation as soon as possible to ensure I will be fit and ready for the 2012-13 season,” Culina said.

"Whilst I feel frustrated to sit out the season I have nothing but confidence in how the team are playing and the young talent coming through will ensure the Jets have a great season.

"I am really loving my time in Newcastle and thank all those that have sent me best wishes to get back on the paddock and to my team-mates who will do Newcastle proud this year."
