EXCLUSIVE: Newcastle Jets say marquee striker Joel Griffiths will almost certainly return to the club in January as club owner Con Constantine’s deadline of November 30 arrives for the issue to be resolved.
Constantine has set the November 30 deadline for Chinese champions Beijing Guoan to table an offer of $1m to buy the player.
According to the club, such an amount has yet to be received and with the Jets refusing to budge on re-loaning the player back to China, it now appears more than likely the Jets will have Griffiths in their attacking arsenal by January.
"He's a Newcastle Jets player and we expect him to play [for Newcastle] in January. And nothing's been suggested that anything else is the case," Newcastle Jets CEO John Tsatsimas told au.fourfourtwo.com.
"We're sticking with where we sat originally. The Chinese know what the deal is and hopefully there's fruition one way or another.
"Anything can happen in football, but Con's fairly adamant and vehement in his position. Joel showcased his talents here and was good enough to get a start at the Chinese champions and he had a great season."
Unless something dramatic happens in the next 24 hours, Griffiths will be back in the A-League later this season to help push the side towards a final place.
It's another boost for a club that witnessed its best performance under coach Branko Culina in Sunday's revelatory 3-1 win over Sydney FC.
But judging by the performance of their three-man strike-force, Griffiths may have his work cut out regaining his place. The trio of Michael Bridges, Sean Rooney and Labinot Haliti were outstanding at the SFS and applied plenty of defensive pressure on the overworked Sky Blue rearguard.
Bridges with two goals was the pick on a wonderful day for football in the Hunter. Rooney hailed the arrival of the Englishman.
"He's such a leader on the park and you learn off him. When he plays at the point and we all just move around him I'll love that formation," the Young Socceroo told au.fourfourtwo.com.
"It's worked in the past with Bridgey at the point against Fury and again today."
Tsatsimas added that the club will speak with Bridge over the next few days about a longer-term contract at Energy Australia stadium.
